Trailblazer Gold Team

gold_teamThe Trailblazer Gold Team was established in October 2007 by Karen Stewart with three Special Needs players and three Trailblazer coaches. All of the players and coaches were given a uniform, a Gold Team t-shirt, which was provided by the Cincinnati Trailblazer organization. The practices were held once a week at the Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio.

The purpose of the Gold Team was to include Special Needs homeschoolers in the Trailblazer organization by providing a team identity and team activities for the students and their families. The Team provided weekly practices to encourage physical fitness, teamwork, camaraderie and basketball skills appropriate for each individual player. Trailblazer basketball players from all ages groups participated in leading the Gold Team activities and serving as their coaches, teammates and mentors. The program has continued and grown under the leadership of Jane Ruwe from 2010 to the present, changing facilities and locations to accommodate the players and their families.

From Jessica Elam, a current Trailblazer Gold coach:
I have been helping with the Trailblazer Gold Team since last year’s basketball season. I have had a lot of fun helping coach the Gold Team and getting to know them. The kids are all so sweet and fun to be around. They listen well and try whatever it is you tell them to do. I have seen great improvements in not just their basketball skills, but in their personalities as they gain confidence in themselves with the help of all their great coaches. The coaches of TB Gold are a mixture of players and coaches from the Trailblazer Basketball teams. They are all great with the kids and very encouraging to them. A typical TB Gold practice starts with everyone gathering in a big circle in the middle of the court and doing some stretches, jumping jacks and sit ups. The coaches also participate in all the activities with the kids. After the stretching is over, we split up into two groups: the older kids and the younger kids. At the older kids’ side of the court they practice lay ups and free throw shots. They also do some running, passing, dribbling and a little bit of one-on-one with their coaches. Towards the end of their practice they have a scrimmage. At the younger kids practice they start out with shots and also work on dribbling, passing and running. However, the most fun comes for the kids when we ask if they want to play “Duck-Duck-Goose” or “Red Light, Green Light”. When practice is over we all gather at center court again for prayer. Then we all put our fists in together, “Blazers on three! One, two, three, BLAZERS!”

~ Jessica Elam

Currently, there are 10 members of the Gold team. They will have a special presentation on February 23 at our last home game of the season. The Gold team continues to be an important ministry for Trailblazers. Every season we are in need of teen volunteers. If you are interested in helping out with this team please let us know!

Blazer Ball

Recently, the Trailblazer Varsity boys were ranked number 9 nationally on the top ten homeschool basketball team list. This is out of hundreds of teams across the nation. This ranking came by hard work, focus and winning over the Indianapolis Wildcats. The Trailblazers were not even pre-ranked! To jump into 9th place is fabulous accomplishment on the part of our guys. The next big game is against Eastside Golden Eagles and will be played up at Cincinnati Christian University on January 5 at 4:30. If your Trailblazers pull off a win against Eastside, who are ranked 7, this will surely move us up on the list! The boys are working towards heading out to Springfield MO in March for the National Homeschool Basketball Tournament. Literally, the entire town of Springfield is full of homeschool basketball teams and fans. Teams from Florida all the way to Texas are involved. Every college, high school, elementary school and recereation gyms are booked for the tournament. If your Trailblazers keep working the way they are working and playing basketball the way it is meant to be played you will see them playing against the nation’s top teams. This is huge for Trailblazer basketball! In the past Trailblazer teams always spent their week of spring break at Nationals. That changed for a couple of years, but it is returning as a Trailblazer tradition and the hope is that the younger guys and girls will want to work their way up the chain and be rewarded as a JV or Varsity player by attending this esteemed tournament.

In the news our youngest Trailblazer team, the U10 boys are having a great season and are continuing to learn the game of basketball! The win loss column has not been in their favor, but the boys show much improvement each practice and every game. Coach Paul reports that he is so proud of them with each passing week but is most impressed by the team’s courage and confidence playing more experienced teams. He would also like to thank all of the parents their patience and understanding this year and thank everyone for letting him coach their boys.

The Varsity girls stand with a record of 7-2. The JV boys are 6-1 and our U14 boys 2-1. As you can see we are having a great Basketball season!

Come out on January 5 at 4:30pm  at the Cincinnati Christian University gym (directions on the calendar/website) and cheer on your Blazer Boys to a win! And then help them keep working and focusing on doing what it takes to take home a big win from Nationals!! GO BLAZERS!
